Including pet health and dog food

Getting a puppy is certainly a big decision to make. Not only do you need to be fully aware of the responsibility of pet ownership, but you also need to ensure that you are ready for every aspect of the whole dog care journey. It isn’t always going to be sweet cuddles, picturesque walks, and companionship.

Of course, there are some major benefits for having a puppy in your life, especially if you do live on your own as having someone around in your home can really lift your spirits.

Many people decide to get a puppy for a variety of reasons. It may be to encourage you to be more active because you have no choice but to exercise a dog. It might be because your family likes animals and maybe you want to inject some sense of responsibility into your children.

The reasoning can go on and on, but if you find yourself at the beginning of a journey, where you are just weighing up if a puppy is the right thing for you and your family, then this is the post for you. We have included everything you need to help you give your puppy the very best start and help you get used to having a pet under your roof.

Is having a puppy for you?

The good things may seem self-explanatory, but if you are trying to make an informed decision about owning a puppy then we really need to discuss all the good things about it.

First of all, there is companionship. There are loads of dog breeds that can be great with kids for example. Some dogs don’t mind other pets or like long walks. Pick a breed that matches with your lifestyle. A dog needs to be exercised, and so this could be a great way to not only get you out of the house but also encourage you to become more active in your general wellbeing.

Dogs can also be a great way to incorporate life lessons for yourself and your family. Often many couples embark on getting a puppy together first before even having children because it enables them to be responsible for something other than themselves as part of a unit.

Other people like to encourage families to have a dog as children can start to learn about feeding animals, general care which can help them to learn valuable lessons in responsibility. There really are so many great points to having a dog that it can seem a little harsh to start describing some of the bad or ugly points. But while they may not necessarily be things that put your off, they can certainly help you make the right decision.

Things to know before getting a puppy

So now comes some of the bad points about dog ownership. It is a lifelong decision, or at least for the duration of your dog’s life. This isn’t something that you can pick up and put down when you find it convenient.

You also have to consider the costs involved in dog ownership. They do require you to pay out for food, somewhere to sleep and the cost of getting them looked after if you decide to go away on a holiday or away with work. It isn’t easy. You also need to think about if they get sick.

Dogs can get ill just like we can, perhaps not in the same way, or as often, but sometimes they may need treatment, and this can not only cost you money but you also need to be able to ensure that they take any medication.

You also need to bear in mind that you need to be consistent. While you may be encouraged to walk your dog, for example, at first, it may not excite you on cold or winter days. But it still needs to be done. These are the things you need to consider before getting a pet.

Lastly, is your home even capable of housing a dog? Do you have the space? Again it may seem like a good idea at the time, but you also need to have a decent amount of space, a place for a dog to rest or be kept, to ensure that you give them a decent lifestyle, as well as having your own space.

You also need to ensure that you are even able to have pets? If you don’t own your own home and rent, you may need to check your agreement to ensure that you are able to have a pet, or you might end up with a notice to leave or a big bill when you do vacate.

How to prepare for a puppy

There are some of the obvious, more messy jobs that you need to endure when you have a pet. A dog will go to the toilet, either in your garden or while out for a walk and, of course, that will need clearing up.

Also, if your puppy isn’t well, you might find that you also have to clean up an unexpected mess like a sickness. Of course, none of this is pleasant, but it is over as quick as it started.

You may also need to puppy-proof your home. A new dog is going to need its own space and has some of the temptations taken away like any loose cables, easy to open cupboards, and dangerous cleaning products that could hurt them. Crawl on the floor. What can you see? Is there anything that a puppy might be tempted to grab?

Rest assured that although there may be a few bad and ugly things we have covered in dog ownership, we think you will agree that most of them are short-lived experiences. The good definitely outweighs the bad stuff, that is for sure. We hope that this helps you come to the decision of whether pet ownership is right for you.

New puppy tips

Having a new puppy in the house can feel a little overwhelming. Our tips here will help you and your puppy to feel more relaxed.

Take your time – It’s not easy as a human to go to a new place so imagine what it’s like for a puppy. Take the time to help your puppy to get to know your home.

Routine is key – Just like humans, dogs need routine. Decide when you are going to take the dog to the toilet, for a walk and when bedtime is. Stick to this as it will help you both in the longer term.

Consistency – Talk to your family and decide on what rules you all want to follow. That way, everyone is on board.

Boundaries – Setting boundaries is really important. Decide now what and where your dog is allowed to go and stick to your guns.

Give your puppy space – While your new dog will want hugs and kisses, they will also need time and space to explore and get used to all the new smells. Give them that time and let them come to you.
